AWS Classification

This is the American Welding Society (AWS) designation for the wire per AWS A5.18. "E" stands for "electrode." "R" indicates the wire can also be used as a filler rod for GTAW welding. "70" indicates the wire has a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi. "S" indicates this is a solid wire. The final digit refers to the deoxidizers that have been added to the wire alloy (e.g., "-6" indicates the wire contains high levels of silicon and manganese deoxidizers). Optional suffixes may be added to indicate the diffusible hydrogen content of the weld deposit (e.g., "-H4").

Compatible Shielding Gas

This indicates the type of shielding gas used with the alloy, which influences the characteristics of the welding arc, the penetration profile of the arc, and the weld bead appearance. The shielding gas also helps protect the weld pool from contaminants in the surrounding atmosphere.

100% Argon provides a stable arc, narrow penetration profile, consistent weld quality, and minimal spatter. It is the most commonly used shielding gas for TIG welding applications, and it is commonly used for welding nonferrous metals and for creating fillet and butt welds in MIG welding applications.
100% Carbon Dioxide provides a deep and broad penetration profile, making it suitable for short-circuit transfer welding and globular transfer welding applications on thick materials.
98% Argon/2% Oxygen produces smaller droplets and higher puddle fluidity than an argon/carbon dioxide shielding gas mix. It is recommended for axial spray transfer welding or pulsed spray transfer welding.
90% Argon/10% Carbon Dioxide provides a broader, flatter penetration profile than a shielding gas mix with argon and oxygen. It is recommended for use with axial spray transfer welding or pulsed spray transfer welding applications.
75% Argon/25% Carbon Dioxide typically produces less spatter and better bead appearance than 100% carbon dioxide shielding gas. It is recommended for short-circuit transfer welding applications.
