Purge paper blocks off a section pipe surrounding a weld gap to keep purge gas contained. It can be placed closer to the weld gap than purge bladders, which creates a smaller chamber and reduces the amount of purge gas needed. Purge paper is cut to size to suit each individual installation and is held in place using water-soluble purge tape. Paper is dissolved by flushing the pipe with water or steam after the work is complete. Pipe purging is done before TIG welding stainless steel, aluminum, and other corrosion-resistant materials to prevent oxidation that can negatively affect appearance and the material's corrosion resistance.
