Rotary and random orbital disc sanders spin round sanding pads to remove material from large, flat surfaces. They accept abrasive discs that attach to the sanding pad. Rotary sanders move their pad in a circle for rapid stock removal and rough sanding before using a random orbital or sheet sander for smoothing and finishing. They provide the best results when sanding with the grain to avoid tearout. Random orbital sanders move their pad in a circle and whirl it in small oval orbits to minimize swirl marks and cross-grain scratches. They require only light pressure since the eccentric motion of the pad does most of the work. Random orbital sanders perform a range of sanding tasks, from paint stripping to finishing—depending on their orbit diameter, the grit of the abrasive disc, and the density of the backing pad.
