They set their sanding drum vertically on their spindle and abrade material as the spindle rotates and moves the drum up and down. Spindle sanders perform detailed work more quickly and uniformly than hand sanding.

Spindle sanding machines spin and bob their sanding drum to create smooth edges and reduce the risk of burns on curved or contoured workpieces. Workpieces are placed around or held along the sanding drum and guided with just enough pressure to sand the surface.
