Plumb bobs tie onto the end of a string and hang down from above to find a true vertical reference line. Also known as plummets, their weighted body tapers to a point establish a plumb line and transfer center from a point above to the surface below. They are commonly used when positioning floor insets, aligning walls and framing, and marking surveying points.
Steel Plumb Bobs
Steel plumb bobs are less dense than brass bobs, so they settle faster to plumb. This makes them better suited for indoor than outdoor use since wind could cause swaying. They are machined as a single piece with a hex body and cone-shaped tip.

Brass Plumb Bobs
Brass plumb bobs are machined with a full-taper body that comes to a sharp point and has a replaceable tip to maintain higher accuracy than steel bobs. They are also denser than steel bobs to minimize swaying in windy conditions, and they are more corrosion resistant to withstand the elements in outdoor use.
