Insert-cooled vests have pockets that hold inserts that keep workers cool. Inserts are charged in a freezer or cooler before use. They cool the body to the same temperature regardless of ambient temperature so they're often worn in extreme heat as evaporative vests cool the body based on ambient air temperature. They cool better than evaporative vests in high humidity, though evaporative vests stay cooler longer in these conditions. They are generally used when wearing a full protective suit where air cannot circulate around the vest to cool as is required by evaporative cooling vests. Insert-cooled vests are heavier than evaporative vests, though fewer inserts can be used to lighten vests. A liner keeps heat out and traps cool air in.
