Evacuation chairs allow people to sit upright during transport up and down stairs to escape buildings in an emergency. Also known as stair chairs, they are placed near each staircase along an evacuation route to assist those unable to traverse stairs on their own. They are commonly found in public buildings, offices, multifamily residences, schools, nursing homes, and hospitals.
