Steam pressure-relief valves open automatically when steam pressure in a system builds up or exceeds a preset limit. Also called safety valves, they open to release steam away from equipment and when the pressure inside the system returns to the normal preset limit, the valve closes. These valves protect pressure vessels, boilers, and steam piping systems and prevent system failure, damage, or injury. Valves are rated by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to designate their intended function under normal operating conditions.
