Hot water pressure-relief valves open automatically when pressure in a system builds up or exceeds a preset limit. Also called safety valves, they open to release excess pressure in hot water systems and close when the pressure inside the system returns to the preset limit. These valves protect pressure vessels, boilers, and hot water piping systems and prevent failure, damage, or injury. Valves are rated by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to designate their intended function under normal operating conditions.
