Atmospheric vacuum breakers ensure system fluids travel in one direction through a system and prevent back-siphonage but are not used for continuous pressure applications. Pressure on the inlet side of the breaker caused by flowing media seals the atmospheric vent and opens the valve to create a flow path. The atmospheric vent introduces air into the system when the flow is off to make a gap that breaks the vacuum and prevents liquid from traveling backward.
