Copper tubing, also called copper pipe, is commonly used in plumbing, heating, cooling, and other systems. Lightweight copper is antimicrobial, durable, and more resistant to corrosion than other metals. Types K, L, M, and DWV (Drain, Waste, Vent) are designated by ASTM International standard sizes. Each type represents a series of sizes with different wall thicknesses. Copper tubing must be permanently marked in accordance with its governing specifications to show tube type, the name or trademark of the manufacturer, and the country of origin.

Low-Pressure Type M Copper Tubing for Plumbing
Type M copper tubing uses less copper, has the thinnest wall thickness, and is lighter and more economical than other copper tubing for easy installation. Low-pressure applications include HVAC, potable water service and distribution, fire protection, fuel/fuel oil, and vacuum. Medium-Pressure Type L Copper Tubing for Plumbing
Type L copper tubing has thicker or denser walls to handle greater pressures than Type M tubing. Type L hard tubes are found indoors to supply potable water, carry hot water, and supply water to sprinkler systems. Type L flexible roll tubing is easier to use underground and outdoors, doesn’t need fittings, and eliminates concerns about water wearing tubing down due to high pressure. High-Pressure Type K Copper Tubing for Plumbing
Type K copper tubing contains higher amounts of copper and thicker walls than Types L and M to withstand higher pressures. This durable tubing is commonly used in commercial buildings, city water mains, and industrial construction. Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Copper Tubing
Copper tubing for air conditioning and refrigeration, also called ACR copper tubing, is commonly used for air conditioning, refrigeration, natural gas, LP gas, and compressed air. These tubes are easily connected using sweating or flare fittings. ACR tubing meets Medical Gas Industry standards and can be used with medical gases. Corrosion-Resistant Coated Copper Tubing for Gas
This copper tubing is coated with a yellow layer of polyethylene for added corrosion resistance. The yellow coating adds visibility, making tubing easy to identify. It also protects copper tubing from corrosive environments including corrosive soils in underground applications. Corrosion-resistant copper tubing is commonly used with natural gas and LP gas distribution.
