Paint brushes come in a variety of sizes, handle types, and bristle composition. Natural-bristle brushes are made with animal hair and apply oil-based paints, varnishes, shellac, and polyurethanes. Natural brush hairs split (flag) to hold more paint and help assure a smooth finish. Synthetic brushes are made of polyester, foam, or nylon. Synthetic brushes work best with all types of latex paints. Because they are washable, polyester and nylon brushes can last a long time. Foam brushes are intended for single-use applications.

Foam Brushes

Foam Brushes
Foam brushes are inexpensive painting tools for either oil or water-based paints. They work best with thin products like stain and polyurethane finishes. These brushes wear out quickly and are best used as throw-away, single-task brushes.

Chip Brushes

Chip Brushes

Chip brushes are used in both painting and maintenance work. They are used to sweep away chips and dust from machinery. And, these brushes paint small places or corners where regular brushes cannot fit well. They are commonly used with solvents since they are made with natural China bristles or hog's hair that don't melt. Chip brushes can be used with glue, resin, epoxy, and oils. Most are inexpensive and can be disposed of after one use.

Angle Sash Brushes

Angle Sash Brushes
The bristles of an angled sash brush (sometimes called a cutting brush) are cut at a slant, making it easier to paint clean lines. These brushes apply paint to surfaces with grooves, like cabinets, furniture, or paneled doors. The angled sash style is effective for painting close to another surface, such as between window trim and walls.

Varnish Brushes

Varnish Brushes
For oil-based varnishes, natural-bristle brushes such as china bristle (hog's hair) apply the varnish in a thin, even coating. Natural bristle brushes can apply layers of varnish to reduce streaks and distribute the varnish evenly across a wood surface. For water-based varnishes, synthetic brushes with flagged (or split) ends hold their shape while providing an ultra-smooth finish. Water causes natural bristles to splay, which can lead to applying varnish unevenly. Flagged bristles hold more varnish and spread it smoothly in an even, thin layer.
