Nonselective herbicides eliminate all vegetation along sidewalks and driveways, between pavers and landscaping stones, and on other areas intended to be free of growth. Also known as broad spectrum herbicides, they require care to prevent them from drifting outside of the targeted area. They are sometimes used to kill off old turf before laying new sod.

Selective herbicides cull weeds without damaging desired grasses and plants in the area or worrying about when and where to apply.

Specialty herbicides target and kill specific types of vegetation and eliminate growth in areas where other herbicides may be ineffective.
