ANSI Lockset Function

This indicates the lockset’s specific type of inside and outside locking method, which correlates to a particular ANSI numerical code.

Dummy have no locking or latching mechanism to secure doors. They allow users to pull the door open and keep them closed with an external latching mechanism.
Half Dummy have a handle that does not operate on their exterior with a blank plate on the interior. They are used on doors that are accessed frequently from the outside and do not require locks or latches.
Passage have no locking mechanisms to keep doors secure. They are used for interior doors between spaces where there is no need for security.
Closet have an exterior handle that does not move with a keyway and no internal locking or unlocking functions. The inside handle can be activated for egress at all times.
Exit have outside handles that do not lock or unlock and do not move. They provide free egress from the inside.
Privacy have a thumb-turn or push-button lock on the interior handle and an emergency keyway on the exterior. Their locks engage from the interior handle, which then unlocks the door for rapid exits.
Storeroom have an external keyway without internal locking or unlocking functions. They are often used on storeroom doors, or in other secure areas that are unoccupied and where controlled access is needed.
Hotel have an internal thumb-turn lock and an external keyway or electronic lock housed on the door trim. They automatically lock when the door is closed, which prevents the outside handle from operating. When the inside handle is engaged, it unlocks for egress.
Utility have interior and exterior handles that do not move. A key is required to unlock and open the door for entry or exit.
Office have an external keyway with an internal thumb-turn or push-button lock. When they are unlocked, the handles will work from either side. When locked, neither side of the handle will operate when engaged.

Corridor have an internal push-button or thumb-turn lock with an external keyway. The exterior handles open when the handle is unlocked with a key.
Dormitory have an external keyway that is not on the handle itself, and an internal thumb-turn or push-button lock. They include a latch that automatically locks the door every time it closes.
Entrance have an external keyway and an internal push-button or thumb-turn locking mechanism. They unlock via key or when the internal handle is operated.
Classroom have a key-turn hole on the outside, but are blank on the inside. When locked from the outside with a key, the inside handle cannot be moved.
Classroom Security lock from either side of the door with a key. When unlocked, the door opens from either side.
Communicating have a keyway located on the trim rather than on the handle itself. Both sides of the lock must be unlocked to open. They are often used in connected hotel rooms to allow access when both rooms are occupied by the same family or group.
Institutional have a keyway on both the interior and exterior handles that require a key to exit. When locked, the handles are rigid and do not operate. They are used in psychiatric hospitals, prisons, or other facilities where containing individuals is critical to maintain safety.
Intruder have a keyway on both sides and automatically unlock when opened from the interior. They allow internal occupants to lock the door without exiting the room, which is critical in emergency situations.

Lock Assembly Type

Cylindrical install easily but are not as durable and secure as mortise locks. They are often used with a deadbolt lock to provide additional security.
Mortise are durable and more secure than standard cylindrical locks. They require a cavity to be made in the door to house them and are often used in high-traffic areas.

Hand Orientation

Left-Handed refers to the position of the hinges and mounting hardware on the door. When standing near the outside of a push-open or in-swing door, if the hinges are on the left side, a left-handed lockset will be required. Similarly, when standing near the outside of a pull-open or out-swing door, if the hinges are on the left side, a left-handed lockset is required.
Right-Handed refers to the position of the hinges and mounting hardware on the door. When standing near the outside of a push-open or in-swing door, if the hinges are on the right side, a right-handed lockset will be required. Similarly, when standing near the outside of a pull-open or out-swing door, if the hinges are on the right side, a right-handed lockset is required.
