Single-grit sharpening stones create a sharp edge on a variety of material. They are used when the same sharpening process is regularly performed and grits don't need to be changed often. Sharpening stones are often used with oils or water to lubricate the surface which minimizes clogging to ensure a smooth, sharp edge without scratching.

India Single-Grit Oilstones
Single-grit India stones are made with aluminum oxide abrasive that provides light material removal for deburring and cutting edge preparation while producing a good finish. Oilstones are lubricated using abrasive stone oil to push the loosened abrasive and metal shavings away from the stone's surface to create a smooth, polished blade. Oil is applied to surface before sharpening and generally takes longer to sharpen than waterstones.
