An abrasive applied to backing material cuts small amounts of material from the workpiece to smooth the surface, remove sharp edges, and debur metal. Sheets are often torn down to fit handheld power sanders or to wrap around sanding blocks.

Wet/Dry Screens for Drywall Sanders
Wet/dry drywall sanding screens have silicon carbide abrasive applied to a screen backing. They're precut to fit pole-mounted drywall sanding pads. Screen-backed wet/dry abrasives don't clog and are washable for reuse. Silicon carbide is a sharp synthetic abrasive that provides a fine finish in low-pressure applications such as finishing and painting preparation. It breaks down faster than aluminum oxide.
