Abrasive Grade

Abrasive grade is a general classification of the coarseness of the grit. For coated abrasives, each grade includes a range of grits that are generally used for the same type of tasks. For nonwoven abrasives, grade is designated by the manufacturer.

Coarse provides moderate material removal, smooths rough surfaces, and removes moderate rust, gouges, and deep scratches. Coarse grade grits range from 40 to 60.
Medium removes light scratches, rust, and smooths imperfections. Medium grits range from 80 to 120.
Fine deburrs metal and smooths surfaces before final finishing. Fine grits range from 150 to 220.
Very Fine buffs metal and removes light paint from metal and wood. Very fine grits range from 240 to 280 (P240 to P320).
Extra Fine polishes metal and smooths raised wood grain. Extra fine grits range from 300 to 360 (P360 to P600).
Super Fine buffs metal and plastic, smooths finishes between coats, and removes fine scratches without removing stock. Super fine grits range from 400 to 600 (P800 to P1200).

Abrasive Grit

Abrasive grit is the industry-determined relative grain size assigned to coated abrasives. Lower grits have larger grains and are used for heavy-duty applications. Higher grits are used for smoothing and finishing. The grain size gets smaller as the grit number goes up, indicating that the grain and abrasive surface are finer and less aggressive.

Two standards (CAMI and FEPA) describe similar grits using different number designations. CAMI designations are indicated with a number alone, while FEPA designations are preceded with the letter P. Roughly equivalent grits are shown together below.

Backing Material Type

Abrasive backing describes the substrate that the abrasive is applied to. Backing can affect how the abrasive performs on different surfaces and in different applications.

Cloth is flexible, conforms to contours, and is more durable and tear resistant than paper.
Foam conforms to irregular surfaces and can be used in wet operations.
Screen has an open weave that resists clogging when used on drywall and other soft materials. Screen-backed abrasives can be washed and reused.

Backing Material Weight

Backing material weight indicates the thickness and durability of the adhesive backing. Paper backings are generally used dry, while cloth and film backings can be used wet or dry. Heavier backings are thicker and used for coarser grit and higher pressure applications than light, thinner backings.

J is the most flexible cloth backing used for finish work and curved surfaces where material removal is not desired. Sometimes called jeans weight.
X is a moderately flexible cloth backing that balances blending with stock removal for the widest range of applications for cloth backings. Sometimes called drills weight, it is stiffer and less flexible than J-weight cloth.

Coating Coverage

Coating coverage describes how much abrasive grain covers the surface.

Closed has abrasive grain across the entire surface to provide a smoother finish and faster material removal than open-coat coverage.
Open has grit on about 50% of the surface to prevent swarf from clogging the surface and keep the workpiece cooler.
