Grinding Wheels for Light-to-Moderate Grinding of Tool Steels
Straight cup (type 6) grinding wheels for use on heat-sensitive tool steels and light-to-moderate feed rates are made of grade 38A aluminum oxide. Grade 38A fused white aluminum oxide is highly friable to maintain a sharp edge when grinding and sharpening high-speed tool steel, heat-sensitive steels, and cast-alloy steel.
Type 6 Wheel
Type 6 is cup shaped with straight sides for surface and off-hand grinding of flat surfaces. They're usually installed on horizontal and vertical spindle machines.

Grinding Wheels for Moderate-to-Heavy Grinding of Tool Steels
Straight cup (type 6) grinding wheels for moderate-to-heavy stock removal of tool steels are made of grade 32A aluminum oxide. Grade 32A is a vitrified monocrystalline aluminum oxide grain for cool and fast cutting of vanadium alloys and other steels. It's suitable for use at moderate to heavy feed rates with minimal dressing in cylindrical, surface, and toolroom grinding.
