Reinforcing

Reinforced has a layer of fiberglass on each side of the wheel to increase wheel strength and durability when cutting workpieces that are not clamped in place.
Non-Reinforced install in fixed-base machines that have a controlled cutting plane and when the workpiece is securely clamped in place when cutting.

Abrasive Material Grade

Abrasive grade is a Norton-specific general classification of the quality and characteristics of the abrasive material used in the wheel.

A is a tough, long lasting brown aluminum oxide that has limited metal removal rate when cutting soft to medium steels.
23A is a blend of grades 32A and 57A aluminum oxides with higher material removal rates than grade 57A alone for cool, burn-free cutting of steel.
38A is fused white aluminum oxide that is highly friable to maintain a sharp edge when grinding and sharpening high-speed tool steel, heat-sensitive steels, and cast-alloy steel.
57A is a semifriable, fused brown aluminum oxide for cool, burn-free grinding of heat-sensitive metals and all steels. It balances cut quality and wheel life at light to medium feed rates.

Grit

Grit describes the size and coarseness of the abrasive. Coarser grit wheels are used for fast cutting of hard materials. Finer grits cut slower but produce higher quality, burr-free edges.

Hardness

Hardness is a measure of how strongly the bonding agent holds the abrasive grains together. Hardness is described using an A-Z letter scale, with A indicating the softest (weakest) bond and Z representing the hardest (strongest) bond. Harder materials require a softer abrasive, while softer materials require a harder abrasive.

Medium (I-P) is used for tool and cylindrical grinding of moderatly hard materials and medium contact area (1/4" to 1/2" wheel width or 25% to 50% of total wheel width).
Hard (Q-Z) is used on soft materials and narrow contact areas (less than 1/4" wheel width or 25% of total wheel width).

Bond

The bonding agent holds abrasive grains together. It contributes to wheel hardness, porosity, grinding temperature, resistance to loading, and the optimal working speed. It also determines the optimal contact area. Large contact area indicates a wheel over 1/2" width or workpiece wheel contact of 50% or more of total wheel width. Medium contact area indicates a 1/4" to 1/2" wheel width or workpiece wheel contact of 25% to 50% of total wheel width. Narrow contact area indicates a wheel less than 1/4" wide or workpiece wheel contact of up to 25% of total wheel width.

B is a resin bond used for light cut-off applications.
B25 is a durable resin bond for dry, free cutting in high-production applications.
B25N is a stiff, durable resin bond for free-cutting applications.
BNA2 is a durable resin bond for making thin cuts that maximizes cut rates while minimizing kerf loss.
E7 is a shellac bond for sensitive, high-precision applications where discoloration and burs are not acceptable.
R30 is a rubber bond used in wet cutting applications with tight tolerances and minimal cutting or material removal is required.

Specification

Wheel specification is a Norton-specific code that identifies wheel composition by abrasive, grit, wheel hardness grade, structure (grain spacing), and bond type. This code, printed on all Norton conventional grinding wheels, can be used to quickly identify replacement wheels.
