Buffing and polishing compounds are applied to buffing wheels to remove surface contaminants and imperfections. They clean, buff, polish, and finish a variety of materials, including metal, fiberglass, plastic, and wood. Compounds are in bar form and applied to the wheel by lightly pressing the bar to the rotating wheel. Compounds are color coded so different grits can be easily distinguished from each other.

Final polishing compounds for precious metals create a high polish on soft, precious metals and thin plate. Sometimes called jeweler's rouge, this compound is red to distinguish it from other compounds.
